A service for general access to satellite geoinformation has been developed in Russia
The geoinformation web service, which provides a wide range of consumers with Earth remote sensing (ERS) data, has been developed in Russia, the press service of the Russian Space Systems holding (RKS) told reporters on Thursday.
“Young scientists of the RKS holding” were awarded the Moscow government prize for the creation of a modern geoinformation web-service based on data received from domestic spacecraft for Earth remote sensing (ERS). The development will make it possible to more effectively use the capabilities of the Russian orbital constellation and will make its work generally available to a wide range of users, “the message says.
According to the head of the sector of the Scientific Center for Operational Monitoring of the Earth (NTs OMZ) Nikolai Olshevsky, earlier the information collected by Russian Earth monitoring satellites “was available only to government agencies and services.”
“Now we are introducing a new convenient system to the geodata market, which processes thousands of scenes of data from Russian ERS satellites every day. Already today, the average speed of receiving ordered products is about 10 minutes, “he added.
The service was named “Bank of Basic Products”.
The software and mathematical support is developed taking into account the possibility of automatically generating “basic products” in the future for solving various problems of monitoring agricultural and forest vegetation, the ecological state of surface waters, ice conditions, and emergency situations.
In agriculture, using remote sensing, it is possible to obtain information on the state of agricultural land, crop classification and assessment of the state of crops, as well as on the characteristics and changes in the state of the soil. Similarly, remote sensing can be used to monitor forest cover, identify species and characterize the area, including determining the height of trees and their density. In addition, with the help of remote sensing, it is possible to determine changes in the physical state of the earth’s surface, including as a result of human activity, for example, the landscape in industrial and residential areas, as well as th
