Siberian scientists have invented a new way to combat harmful emissions

Scientists of the Siberian Federal University (SFU) have discovered a new way to detect pollutants emitted by enterprises, based on the reflection of luminous bacteria, the press service of the university reports.

“Scientists of SibFU have discovered a new way of detecting pollutants … As explained by the author, researcher at the laboratory of bioluminescent biotechnologies of SibFU Ivan Denisov, the study presents the specificity of the influence of environmental pollutants on different types of substances by measuring radiation. The mechanism for detecting environmental pollutants is associated with their ability to disrupt the work of enzymes of luminous bacteria. A decrease in the catalytic activity of the latter leads to a decrease in the intensity of light radiation, which allows scientists to record these changes with sensitive detectors and draw conclusions after processing the measurements, “the report says. According to SibFU, the main result of the work is that scientists can use the obtained data for automatic classification of pollutants using neural networks. In the future, subject to constant analysis of wastewater or air using the enzymes of luminous bacteria, this discovery will make it possible to determine which particular enterprise has produced specific harmful emissions.
