High-elastic lithium-ion batteries on liquid electrolyte created in Korea
A team of researchers has developed the world's first stretchable liquid lithium-ion battery, which could form the basis for a new generation of wearable electronics.
Specialists of the Korean Ulsansky National Institute of Science and Technology have created a model of flexible battery, the prototype for which was a plant toadicy. It is an evergreen tree of tropical latitudes with fruits growing directly from the trunk, also known as "Brazilian grapes".
For the first time in years of work on such devices, scientists were able to create a viable model of flexible rechargeable battery using simple and affordable materials. Prior to that, inventors had problems with the loss of their properties or functionality by the cells when changing their shape.
Professor Sudjin Park's team solved this problem by using wood-polymer composites, which are a combination of wood and low-molecular materials. This compound retains its properties even with various deformations and strong bends. It is this compositional component reminiscent of the fruits of the toad.
Scientists have perfected the natural material. They combined carbohydrate fiber with a bipolar transistor, which is used in electronics to amplify electricity fluctuations. The device has become an integral part of the flexible lithium-ion battery with liquid electrolyte, which has good potential to become a sought-after commercial product.
During the tests, the invention showed the complete preservation of the original properties and power after repeated deformation. Developers hope the "elastic" battery will contribute to the widespread spread of flexible wearable electronics and energy storage device
