WOUND-HEALING NANOFIBERS WITH CHITOSAN


Description of the project: today there are many promising areas in the field of nanotechnology. One of them is the technology of electrospinning nanofibers from polymer solutions. Electrospinning is the formation of nano- and microfibers in a high-intensity electric field.

The obtained nanofibers have special properties: an overdeveloped structure and porosity, due to which they are highly effective in filtration and sorption processes, but especially for biomedical purposes for the creation of dressings for the treatment of extensive burn surfaces, non-healing wounds and trophic ulcers. The so-called “wound dressings” are made from chitosan by electrospinning.

Benefits:

  • the coating dissolves on its own as it heals;
  • compatibility with human tissues, complete safety of use;
  • good airtightness and adequate gas and vapor exchange of the wound surface;
  • antibacterial properties without the addition of drugs;
  • healing time is reduced by 20-30% due to stimulation of reparative processes;
  • the wound is not injured when dressing due to the anti-adhesive properties of the coating.

Achieved results: 

The parameters of the forming solution, the parameters of the electrospinning process were selected, and a pilot industrial batch of wound dressings was produced. Preclinical tests of wound dressings with chitosan nanofibers on experimental animals, carried out by physicians, have demonstrated their pronounced wound healing and antimicrobial effects. Positive clinical observations in the treatment of trophic ulcers, burns, post-traumatic wounds determine the urgency of continuing further developments.

To date, the medical and technical requirements have been approved, and programs of technical conditions and clinical trials have been prepared.
