A Chilean startup project has developed a device that can absorb moisture from the atmosphere and turn it into the purest drinking water at the touch of a button.

After the discovery of a rare disease in the youngest daughter of Hector Pino, an engineer in the city of Santiago, in which it became difficult for the body to process the minerals contained in drinking water, the kidneys stopped working and teeth began to crumble, he had to find a solution to the problem.

Bloomberg’s Hello World traveled to Santiago to see Pino’s invention in action. Called FreshWater, it can extract moisture from the air, filter it and turn it into clean drinking water at the touch of a button. The best technology is said to be like magic, and FreshWater certainly lives up to that description.

The device works well enough that it now appears to be a lifeline for people throughout Chile and South America who need access to clean water. The device is being tested in the deserts of northern Chile. Pino hopes to build a compact version of the device soon.
