Scientists have managed to obtain hard and elastic carbon that conducts electricity
Scientists from Yanshan University and the Carnegie Institution have obtained a form of carbon – very hard and at the same time elastic. They subjected to pressure and high temperature a structurally disordered form of carbon – graphene. The pressure exceeded atmospheric by about 250 thousand times, the temperature reached 982 degrees Celsius (1800 degrees Fahrenheit). Scientists have noted that under high pressure, disordered layers of vitreous carbon fuse and join in different ways. This process creates a special structure due to the presence of graphene-like and diamond-like bonds between carbon atoms. So scientists managed to get a hard and elastic carbon that conducts electricity.
“Lightweight, strong and resilient materials are in demand, especially when weight is paramount. In addition, we believe that our synthesis method can be honed to create other unusual forms of carbon and different classes of materials, ”explained study author Zhisheng Zhao.
Scientists still call the new material “compressed glassy carbon”. The researchers noted that a material that combines such unique properties can find many applications, from aerospace technology to military weapons.
