Found a way to obtain ammonia in room conditions

A less energy-consuming and more efficient method of producing ammonia has been invented. The new method does not require a lot of energy and special conditions.

Industrial production of ammonia from nitrogen is very energy intensive – it consumes 1% of all energy produced worldwide. Scientists have found a molecule that helps to significantly simplify the process of obtaining this substance, and most importantly, to reduce energy consumption several times.

Commercially, ammonia is produced from normal atmospheric nitrogen (N2). The process involves the separation of two nitrogen atoms, and this requires strong pressure and high temperature. Scientists used a molecule of borylene (a class of compounds containing boron) to “bond” and separate nitrogen atoms. This reaction takes place at room temperature and normal pressure.

Previously, various metal compounds were used in industrial reactions. Metal atoms break the bond between two nitrogen atoms due to their structure: the size and number of electron orbitals. The molecule created by scientists repeats the orbital structure of such metals and therefore was able to replace them.

The researchers emphasize that it is too early to talk about the widespread introduction of technology into industrial production. However, scientists hope that in the future they will be able to optimize the process and achieve an efficient and easy way to obtain ammon
