Goodyear unveils concept tires with live moss inside
In recent years, Goodyear has brought very unusual tire concepts to Geneva that suggest what the transport of the future will look like. This year was no exception: the company presented concept tires with live moss inside at the Geneva Motor Show, reports New Atlas.
It is assumed that such tires will be able to generate energy through photosynthesis. According to the company’s idea, they will absorb CO2 from the air and moisture from the road surface, feeding the moss inside the sidewall, and generate oxygen. Goodyear expects that in a city the size of Paris, with about 2.5 million cars on the road, widespread use of Oxygene tires will generate about 3,000 tons of oxygen and absorb over 4,000 tons of carbon dioxide per year.
In addition, the concept buses use the energy generated to power the internal electronics, in particular the integrated sensors and the data processing unit. It is also noted that the tires will use Li-Fi technology, which will allow them to “communicate” with other cars and road infrastructure. The treads, Goodyear said, will be 3D printed from rubber powder sourced from recycled tires.
Of course, no matter how interesting the project is, it is still just a concept, which is unlikely to become a reality in the near fut
