China created paper that is resistant to water and fire

Chinese scientists have developed a paper that resists the effects of fire and water. This was reported by the Chinese newspaper “Shanghai Ribao”.

The material was created by a group of researchers led by Professor Zhu Yingjie from the Shanghai Institute of Ceramics at the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The developers claim that this is the first such material in the world.

The paper is made from inorganic materials – “ultra-long hydroxyapatite nanowires”. It is flexible, durable and can withstand temperatures up to 200 degrees Celsius.

Thanks to its multilayer structure, the paper repels water even when its surface is damaged. Other liquids such as coffee, juice or tea cannot color the
material; the new material can be used to preserve vital documents and to make labels that are resistant to high temperatures. It can also be used for billboards with outdoor advertising – dust and dirt from them will be “automatically” washed off by rains.

The developers have already submitted a patent request for their invention in China. Researchers have not yet named the price of the paper, but report that it will significantly decrease after the start of mass production.
