Intellectual property issues discussed in Minsk
On September 28-29, Minsk hosted the IV International Forum on the Protection of Intellectual Property and the eighth meeting of the Advisory Committee on Intellectual Property under the Board of the Eurasian Economic Commission.
The meeting participants discussed the development of the system for registering trademarks of the Eurasian Economic Union and the unified customs register of intellectual property objects of the member states of the Eurasian Economic Union, as well as the application of the principle of exhaustion of the exclusive right to a trademark in the Eurasian Economic Union.
“We are talking about a whole block of draft laws in the field of intellectual property. These are four laws. One of them was signed by the prime ministers of our countries in Grodno last year. And now it came into force after ratification by parliament. This is the Treaty on the Protection of Intellectual Property Rights, in which, as we assume, our countries and authorized bodies harmonize their relations on these issues, ”explained Samat Aliyev, Deputy Director of the Department for Business Development of the EEC Ministry of Economy and Financial Policy.
The second is the Trademark Agreement of the Eurasian Economic Union. The forum participants hope that it will be signed by the end of the year and will come into force after ratification. According to the deputy director, its adoption will greatly facilitate the life of the business.
The third agreement concerns the unified customs register. “As experts said, they have been waiting for him for a long time. In fact, today the life of a business is complicated within the framework of a single Customs Union. And the adoption of these amendments on the unified customs register will also significantly simplify the law enforcement practice in our countries, ”said Samat Aliyev.
The fourth agreement is also now in a high degree of readiness. However, it is not discussed in this forum. The deputy director added that he also refers to intellectual property. This is a copyright agreement, where new norms will be adopted, including for the Belarusian authors’ community, which increases the transparency of collection and distribution of copyright fees and payments.
